Application for Citizenship

Eligibility criteria to become a Canadian citizen:

Permanent Resident of Canada

You must be a permanent resident of Canada and should not come under any examination for any fraud. The applicant should meet all the conditions for a PR.

Time

Just before signing the application for citizenship, applicants (minors and adults) must have been living in Canada for at least 3 years from 5 years of time.

Income tax filing

If required under the Income Tax Act, the applicant should have a good record of personal income tax filing in three tax years that are fully or partially within the five years just before the date of application.

Language skills

You should be proficient in one of the official languages of Canada before the date of signing the application if you are above 18 years. English and French are the two official languages of Canada. The Canadian Language Benchmark (CBL) is at least level 4 and applicant has to meet this level. But if you are looking for a secondary or post-secondary program in English or French, then you are exempted from this requirement.

Citizenship Test

Applicants between the age of 18 and 54 have to take a citizenship test for getting citizenship.

About test

The main motive of this test is to know how much an applicant knows about the rights and responsibilities of Canada such as Canada’s geography, history, economy, government, laws, etc.

Description about the test:

• The test is available in English or French
• It has 20 multiple choice and true or false questions
• Duration of the test is 30 minutes
• Applicant has to give 15 correct answers to pass the test

The mode of the test is generally oral but there is uncertainty in the mode of test. Only on the day of the test, citizenship official informs you whether you will have a written or an oral test. If any trouble creates while reading or writing, then that person can take oral test. But it is not confirmed that you are allowed to take an oral test on the same date because the oral test is given by citizenship official at a hearing. You can get the same date else a date after 4 to 8 weeks can also be given by the official.
